Boom Writer

If you don't want to read my brief description below, feel free to check out the video link below.  It's less than two minutes.

Essentially, it's a free website that encourages collaborative writing for grades 4-12.

As a teacher, you can select a writing prompt by genre or create one of your own.  Once you do so and have your "classroom" set up, students create avatars before responding to your writing prompt.  Following a student's writing prompt, other students can (if you so choose) respond or add to each other's responses.  If not, students can remain individually responsible for their posts.  Then, regardless of whether or not you want them to add / edit each other's writing, students can be permitted to read each other's responses or stories. After this, they can VOTE on the best ones using a specific feature included on this program.

Students who receive the most votes earn "points", which then allow them to "buy" (with earned points, not money) items for their avatars.

Kind of a neat idea for middle school... Could be a fun "writer's workshop" idea for Language Arts, or even narrative tool for a writing class.

It might even be a good way for students to retell their understanding of a particular studied item (such as a war, or different functions of the human brain) in other content areas.

Diigo VS

Diigo is a free social bookmarking, research, and knowledge sharing tool created to mimic the ease of taking notes while providing a network for sharing and discovering information.

Diigo allows you to take personal notes and highlight text information on web pages just as you would on a piece of paper. You can then bookmark and save this information for further review, while adding tags to keep everything organized. In bookmarking this information, you can also choose to share with colleagues and friends to allow them to access the web page, view your notes and highlights, and add their own annotations. All of this information is also saved online and can be accessed by any computer or browser, including cell phones with browsing capabilities (https://digitalresearchtools.pbworks.com/f/Diigo+Description.pdf).
